Dirty Girl

So here's a little song we sing to our kids, an adaptation of Grandma Dickson's cub leader days:
"Dirty Bill (we insert 'girl'), dirty girl,
lives on top of a garbage hill,
never takes a bath and never will,
eeww, pewww, dirty girl"

Our kids have loved singing it and also, coincidentally, love getting dirty! (thanks to friends Lisa and Rebecca, we learned early on that it was okay, in fact, necessary, for kids to have a little mess in life!)  No Kelly child has perfected the art of getting dirty better than our dear sweet Lauren.  Today we have had lots of rain.  During a break in the clouds we went to the school playground to run a bit.  While there, and playing with friends, all the kids were in the field running around.  I was being a good mom, keeping an eye on my kids, and saw that the girls were sitting on the grass.  What I didn't notice until it was too late, was that they were sitting in a HUGE mud puddle.  By that time, the damage was done, clothes would need to be washed anyway, so I let them have fun.  And this is the result...

Now, you'll notice that one child is slightly less muddy than the other.  When I inquired to Maren about this, she informed me that "Buddha put mud on me, so I put mud on her...."
Is this the face of an innocent victim - I think not!!!

It really was quite a funny sight to see, and it only took about four shampoo treatments to get 'most' of the dirt and mud out of Lauren's hair.  But dang it, I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard.  It was quite a show.  I guess you're only 2 once right?!?!

I think Maren looks completely innocent. You can tell that Buddha smeared that mud all over her face so perfectly. Ha. What cuties.

that is so funny!!! i'm not so good at letting emma get dirty, once recently i let her just play in the mud and she didn't really know what to do, because she's never been allowed to play in the mud before! i'm a mean mommy. i love maren's face in the last picture!

I was like that with Dallin, then my friends (who I mentioned in the post) told me that they never let their kid get dirty, then when it was time to paint, play dough etc. they didn't want to. With that advice, I loosened the reigns and let them have their moments in the mess.

You're a good mom, Denise - I love that you see the humour in it. I had a hard time with that much dirt when my kids were young - but this was before the days of baby wipes etc. We always had to take along a damp face cloth in a bag for clean-ups.

I have a strong testimony of baby wipes and disposable diapers!!!

You are a great mommy. I think I'd have to laugh too. After I read your blog, I went to get Walker his cereal. He managed to drop the whole bowl on himself, chair and floor. I reacted very calmly about it all thanks to reading your post. I am trying every day to loosen up about messes too! Life is too short and kids are only kids for so long.

I am so happy to have found your blog! Yea! Now I can keep up with you guys and pine for Boston at the same time.

I love the mud mess (and she looks so innocent :-)). I try my hardest to be uptight about messes, but with 5 boys, it is to no avail. I cannot believe how absolutely filthy my boys get each and every day! Hopefully it means I'm doing something right!

I love it! I am glad I am not alone. All of the other mommies look at me like I am crazy when I let Scottie splash in all the mud puddles around.
